How to Reset an Echo Dot?

We all want our voice assistants to recognize our voice, preferences, and choices. If you are planning to sell your Echo device or you are planning to buy a new model, then you must reset your Echo device. When you bring your Echo device to the factory default settings, none of your personal data is left on the device. The process to erase your personal data from the device is quite simple and easy. 

Before we move ahead with the reset process, we first need to know what is an Echo Dot device. Echo Dot is a speaker introduced by Amazon with voice-enhanced functionality. It enables you to listen to the news, songs, sports scores, weather forecast and answers your questions.

It also offers additional functionality to the users through its connection with services like Twitter, Uber, and Spotify. Now, let us move on with the process to reset Alexa device to factory default settings. 

To Reset an Echo Dot:

  • Press and hold the Microphone off and Volume down buttons.
  • Wait until the light ring turns orange (about 20 seconds).

Factory Reset Echo Dot-

Mentioned below are the two steps that you are required to carry out in order to reset your Echo Dot.

Step 1: Deregister Your Device

If you are planning to get rid of your Echo Dot device, then the first thing that you will have to do deregister your Echo Dot from the Alexa account. In order to do that, go to your Alexa app and select Settings, and then go to Device Settings. 

After that, select the Echo Dot device that you wish to deregister, and then you need to select Deregister. Once you are done with deregistering your Echo device, your device will get removed from the Amazon account. After that, you can register your device using a separate Amazon account. 

Alternate Method to Deregister

In case you prefer using your PC to deregister your Dot, then that can also be done. First, you can launch your internet browser and then go to the main website of Amazon.com. In case you have not signed into your Amazon account, then that's the first thing you will have to do. 

After that, select the option of accounts and links. After that, go to the option of Digital content and devices. After that, select the option of Manage content and devices. Then, go to the next page and then select the option of devices. The gallery of all the Amazon devices that you have registered will open up before you. 

Select your Echo Dot device that you wish to deregister. Go down and select the option of Deregister. Also, you will see an option to delete all the audio recordings from your Echo device.

Step 2: How to Reset Your Echo Device

In case you are using a first-generation Echo Dot speaker, then you will require a pin or paper clip to reset your Echo Dot device. Press the reset button and keep on holding it using the paper clip. The reset button is located at the base of your Echo device. 

Don't release the button until the device light turns on and then turns back on once again. Also, the light ring will change its color to orange. After that, your device will go into setup mode. When the setup process gets completed, your Echo device will reset once again. 

In case you are using a second-generation Echo Dot device, then you will be required to press and then hold the Volume down and Microphone off button simultaneously for the next 20 seconds. Then, you will see a light ring turning to orange, which indicates that the device is going to enter the setup mode.

If you are using a third-generation Echo Dot, then the process to reset this device is quite easy. All you have to do is to press and hold the button of Action for the next 30 seconds. After that, the light ring will become orange and your device will go into the setup mode. 

So these are the two steps that one is required to carry out in order to fix the problem of how to reset Echo Dot device. You are required to follow two steps. First, you need to deregister your device and then you have to follow all the steps to reset your Echo device. Once the reset is over, you will see an orange light and your device will go into setup mode.
